Attack of the Spiders

I love these giant spiders and they couldn’t be easier.

So here we go…

Supplies:

  • black pipe cleaners (or any other colour- you can just spray paint them black)
  • gorilla glue
  • black spray paint
  • Command hooks (the ones with a little metal hook)
  • large styrofoam balls
  • smaller styrofoam balls
  • small amount of red paint

Cut a small amount off of each ball.  Just enough to get a flat surface to make it easier to glue them together.

Spray paint all the styrofoam balls and the pipe cleaners (if you didn’t have black ones available).  The styrofoam does absorb a lot of the spray paint so a few coats are needed.

Put a small amount of Gorilla glue on the 2 flat spots.  Let dry for a couple of hours.

Cut each pipe cleaner in half, gently bend each leg and insert each leg into the styrofoam.  I also added 2 little red eyes.  Only because my son freaked out that the spiders didn’t have any eyes.

Use command strips wherever you want to hang your spiders.  This is the best part.  You can put your spider anywhere, brick, siding, anywhere.  And you can just peel them off after Halloween.  Or if you’re like me you will probably be too lazy to ever bother taking them off.

Now take your spider and stab him onto the little metal hook.  If you’re not a big fan of spiders you will love this part.

And now you have a swarm of giant spiders attacking your home.  How awesome it that.

*****Update****

A friend of mine just made these and had it go terribly wrong.  She used Krylon spray paint and it disintegrated the Styrofoam balls.  I used Rustoleum Flat Protective Enamel spray paint (it’s just what I had at home in the garage) and had no problems with it.  But I guess some spray paint will destroy Styrofoam.  I had no idea!  So maybe to be safe it’s best to just used acrylic craft paint to paint the Styrofoam black.

    • Good question. I only had them up for about 3 weeks and they were somewhat protected by our porch. But that October we did get a lot of rain and wind and they were totally fine when I took them down after Halloween. The spray paint I used was indoor/outdoor paint.

  1. love these, may have to make them for halloween with the boys i look after :D thanks for linking up for the aloha friday hop :)
