Fridge Mats from $2 Placemats

fridge-coastersSo did you know there was such a thing as fridge mats? I know kind of ridiculous. But when I saw all that trendy chevron and polka dot cuteness I was convinced that something this was ridiculous was absolutely necessary.

Target-threshold

I found the idea of using inexpensive placemats in a magazine months ago. But never got around to finding the perfect placemats to use.  So while my husband had our screaming boys in the cereal aisle, I scooted away to check out the placemat selection at Target. And for $2 a pop, I found a few good options (I bet a dollar store would carry them too).fridge-ogranizationFlipped over, traced and then trimmed the mats to fit. In total I used 7 mats, but it would depend on the number of shelves in your fridge.fridge-organizationHopefully now that it’s all pretty I’ll do a better job keeping it clean.kitchen-organization-tips I should be embarrassed about this. But whatever.

  2. I dunno, where do you find placemats with a rubber backing so they don’t slide? I have a regular fridge, one placemat would not be wide enough to cover a shelf so how do you overlap them and not have everything catch on the seems?

  3. i love this idea!! i just cleaned my refrigerator out and i so want to do this! Ok this might be a silly question, (hehe) but do the place mats stick automatically? Or do I need to add some something to make it stick? Does that make sense?!?
    Thanks! :)

  4. It looks like you were able to cut the place mats to fit exactly. Is it an exact fit or do they slide around at all?

    • They don’t slide around at all I think it’s because of the rubbery background. I did cut the mats to fit but I didn’t cut them perfectly.

  5. Hey! I love this tip, but just a quick question- were you able to find mats big enough to fit your shelves or did you use more than one mat per shelf? I went to Target yesterday and found some really cute ones, but they were not wide enough. (So now I’m using them on my dining room table- they’re that cute)

    • Kelley your fridge selves must be bigger than mine. I found mine at Target and had to trim mine down. I have a side by side fridge.

  6. I bought those same mats from Target, but I’m going to use them as a temporary back splash in my rental. Unfortunately my fridge doesn’t have solid glass shelves, just wire shelves so I can’t use this awesome idea (just yet!).

    • I have to say that the placemats really do hide all those spills and crumbs, which is probably a bad thing since it will even further delay me actually cleaning my fridge.

    • I’ve been using them for about a month now and I love them. They really do hide all that dirt. Now I can even further delay cleaning my fridge :)

  7. Hi Danielle,
I saw this on FB but I came over to check out how you’d cut the placemats to fit. I really need to do this (and clean out the entire fridge!) so thanks for telling where you found the really cute plastic placemats! Pinning this!

  8. Stopping by from Sugar Bee Crafts Take a Look Tuesday :) Absolutely love this idea! My girls are always spilling water and juice in the refrigerator and this would be so much easier to clean and replace if necessary! Heading out to Target today! Thanks for the idea :)

  9. This is a great idea! Not only will it help to keep your fridge clean longer it also brightens it up. Linking up from Mom’s Monday Mingle. Following you on Bloglovin, Twitter, and Facebook. Looking forward to reading more.
    Have a great week :)

  10. Great solution. Looks terrrific, too! You should link this to lots of link parties, it is such a great idea. Keep blogging.

  11. How cute are those mats?! Thank you for the very inspiring post. My fridge is in a constant state of gross-ness, but I bet that a pretty placemat/fridge mat could help the situation.

  12. What a great idea! I tried the Press N’ Seal a while ago but that just left a sticky residue. This seems like it would be much cleaner. We’ll be featuring this over at Someday Crafts tomorrow :)

  13. I clean our fridge every second Friday because my husband goes to the dump the next day and it is always dirty! I am going to the Dollar Store this afternoon to buy these. Thank you – Thank you – Thank you!

    • I’m so happy to help! If they don’t have any at the Dollar Store, I bought these ones at Target (they had 4 or 5 different patterns to pick from). But I imagine dollar stores would sell these mats too.
