birthday-party-craftThere is a new line of Tulip neon fabric paints,Tulip Dimensional Mini 3 PacksTulip One-Step Mini Tie-Dye Kits, & Tulip Fabric Markers and they are pretty cool. For my i Love to Create project I chose to work with the Tulip Fabric Markers to make some freezer paper stencil t-shirts.

Materials for Freezer Paper Stencil T-Shirts

  • T-shirt (Walmart $3.48 each)
  • Tulip Fabric Markers
  • Freezer Paper*
  • Iron
  • Cutting machine (Silhouette) or X-Acto knife

*I have only found freezer paper is Walmart. You can pick up a giant roll for about $5.

This project would make a great activity/take home gift for a kid’s birthday party. The only pre-party preparation is creating and ironing on the stencils. The kids can color in the stencil during the party, peel it off and take them home immediately. No waiting for paint to dry, no setting the marker with an iron, and, no worrying about a house full of kids making a giant mess with paint.

So let’s get started!

You can either trace an image on your freezer paper and cut it out with an X-Acto knife or use a paper cutting machine like a Silhouette or Cricut like I did.

Lay the freezer paper stencil with shiny side down on the t-shirt where you want it. Dry iron it on (don’t use steam). diy-hockey-tshirt

Place a piece of cardboard under the first layer of the t-shirt, you don’t want the fabric markers to bleed through to the back of the shirt.

Let the kids get to work coloring within the stencil.

The bright neon colors don’t show up as well on the darker fabric. But my son insisted on buying the red shirt. So to avoid a major melt down in the middle of Walmart, I gave in.silhouette-cameo-craft-project

My 5 year-old did well at filling in the entire stencil. With younger kids you may just have to help them to ensure that the outer edges of the stencil get kids can pull the freezer paper stencil off, and boom, no waiting for paint to dry. Immediate awesome custom t-shirts.

Let the ink set for 24 hours before washing (no iron setting required).

If you’re looking for the Silhouette files I used, you can find them here: hockey player and hockey phrase. The Lego Star Wars characters came from I Am Momma – Hear Me Roar.

  1. Thanks Marilyn! The only place I have been able to find freezer paper is Walmart. Hopefully that saves you running all around town looking for it (like I did).

  2. This is such a fun project. I’ve been wanting to use freezer paper as a stencil and you’ve inspired me to go pick some up at the store today!
